Personality & Temperament
Maine Coons are often described as “dog-like” — and anyone who has lived with one understands why. They are intelligent, social, and surprisingly trainable. Many enjoy learning tricks, walking on a leash, and even playing fetch.
They love being part of the family’s daily life and are happiest when they can be near their people — whether supervising dinner prep or curling up nearby for the evening.
Despite their fluffy appearance, they are not overly demanding. Their voices are soft and melodic, filled with chirps and trills rather than loud meows. And yes… many Maine Coons genuinely love water!
Appearance
The Maine Coon is strong, solid, and beautifully balanced with their impressive size. They have:
Long, muscular, rectangular bodies
Broad chests and sturdy bone structure
Large, round paws with tufted toes
A distinctive square muzzle
High cheekbones
Large, tufted ears
A heavy, flowing coat with a luxurious chest ruff
Their thick coat developed naturally to help them thrive in the cold Northeastern winters, giving them both beauty and resilience.
A little History
The Maine Coon developed naturally in the Northeastern United States, adapting to harsh winters with their large size and dense coat. Though charming legends suggest they descended from bobcats or raccoons, they are 100% domestic cats brought over by early settlers. In 1895, a female brown tabby named Cosey won one of America’s earliest cat shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The breed later became one of the first registered foundation breeds and was proudly named the official state cat of Maine in 1985.
